Brain health: what is it?

Brain health is difficult to define. It is shrouded in subjectivity, opinion and dogma.

Most tests of the brain examine its functions (thinking processes, feeling and emotions, balance, memory etc). These tests can be complicated. Subjective. Time-consuming and sometimes difficult to understand. Like the brain itself. But unlike other parts of the human body, brain injury or illness doesn’t always show on the outside. If the current tests are inadequate, they can lead to unwanted consequences (and  headlines) for individuals, their families and the community. Nurochek will be the latest in brain health assessment – and a test will take only 2 minutes!

Introducing Nurochek

Nurochek is an Australian innovation and portable brain assessment device currently under development by HeadsafeIP Pty Ltd. It will use established technology to measure aspects of the brain’s normal electrical activity using EEG (electroencephalography) .

A custom headset will shine light into the subject’s eyes, and electrodes on the back of the head will broadcast the EEG signal to a smartphone for analysis and to the cloud for secure storage. It will take 2-3 minutes. And it’s designed to be affordable and portable.

The technology

An initial reading or “baseline” will be taken. For subsequent assessment, a result that differs from the previous test will mean a doctor should be consulted.

After appropriate rest and treatment, return to the baseline will assist the doctor to decide whether it is OK for the subject to return to normal activities, work or school (if all other signs and symptoms of the initial event have abated).
